Tomorrow’s Company is a UK based ‘think’ and ‘do’ tank
We focus on the role of business, and the relationship between business and society. We describe ourselves as a ‘think’ and ‘do’ tank because we deal not only in ideas but in implementation, working with companies as they put new thinking into practice. Every piece of work we do is grounded in the reality of business and tested against the prospects for its execution. We’re a charity and a company limited by guarantee. Our members are mainly companies but also include some individuals. Our funds come from our members, from advisory work and from special funding provided by companies and others for specific programmes. We work across the globe with leaders of businesses and other organisations. We push the boundaries of thinking on issues that are critical to the future of business. And we then work with businesses to help them implement new ideas, learn and pursue sustainable futures.
We build relationships
We have partners among businesses, investors, consultancies, civil society, government, research and academic institutions, students and many others. We look at the ‘big picture’, thinking strategically and holistically, working with people who are interested in leadership, governance, sustainability, organisational development and corporate responsibility. We challenge the cynicism and negativity that often characterise discussions on business and is often rooted in ignorance and organisational self interest. Through thinking and doing, we aim to build a critical mass of leaders who show the understanding, commitment, and confidence to put our shared values and beliefs into practice. By building this critical mass, Tomorrow’s Company is seeking to encourage a change in mindset and to promote the decisions and behaviours that will make for sustainable business success. And in so doing, we will fulfil our founders’ vision of ‘a future for business which makes equal sense to staff, shareholders and society’.
Our Vision
Our vision is to create a future for business which makes equal sense to staff, shareholders and society. We create value with our partners by building a mutually reinforcing link between ideas and implementation – between theory and practice. In so doing, we achieve our purpose of pushing the boundaries of thought leadership and business behaviour.
We describe ourselves as a ‘think’ and ‘do’ tank because we deal not only in ideas but in implementation, working with companies as they put new thinking into practice. Every piece of work we do is grounded in the reality of business and tested against the prospects for its execution.
Our Objectives
Ideas mean little if they cannot be implemented. For Tomorrow's Company, success is a critical mass of business leaders understanding and implementing what we believe in. That's why we work with companies as they seek to put the 'inclusive approach' into practice in their own organisations.
As well as providing unique insights, we help businesses manage the stakeholder, reputational and regulatory pressures that are critical to achieving business success. We advise and help companies globally to make sense of what corporate responsibility and sustainability mean for areas such as leadership, governance and reporting.
Our Origins
Tomorrow's Company originates from the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), which in 1993 initiated an agenda-setting inquiry, led by Sir Anthony Cleaver. The objective was to develop a shared vision of the company of tomorrow, arguing that the successful businesses of the future would establish long-term relationships with all stakeholders, rather than focusing on short-term returns for shareholders.
Tomorrow's Company - the organisation - was set up to advocate this approach and apply it to specific issues. It is a 'think-tank', but also a catalyst, a membership organisation and a cause.
