Tomorrow's Global Company - six months on

On Tuesday 18 December it was the six month ‘anniversary’ of the London launch of Tomorrow's Global Company: challenges and choices which makes it a good time to update those most directly involved in creating the report on all the progress that has been made.

In a few weeks time, on the morning of Thursday 24 January 2008 at the Annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, we will be 'pre-launching' our new website which uses the report as its basis, but above all will provide an ever-growing source of examples of how business is indeed a 'force for good'. If you are in Davos and are able to join us please email Ivor (ivor@tomorrowscompany.com) for more details.

We hope you enjoy reading the update and recognise the progress that has been made since we last met, when we agreed the inquiry report.

Tomorrow's Global Company: Challenges and Choices - 18 June 2007

Today we are delighted to announce the launch of our latest agenda-setting report, "Tomorrow's Global Company:  Challenges and Choices". The report details the complex global challenges facing all of us. These include environment and resource depletion, and issues such as justice and poverty.  It then describes the role global enterprises can and must play in response to these challenges.

In setting out the case for business to ‘expand the space’, we believe the report provides a distinctive approach that leaders of major companies can adopt in working with others to secure outcomes that are  both profitable and sustainable. It argues that business cannot afford to stand outside these challenges, which will shape its future operating environment.

For us, this report marks a vital first step in shaping the process of dialogue, which we are confident can lead to the actions and behaviours required to redefine success, embed values and create new frameworks – the three interlocking priorities which add up to ‘expanding the space’.

Copies of the report can be ordered by contacting Gerard O'Donnell either via email on gerard@tomorrowscompany.com or via telephone on +44 (0)20 7222 7443

If you want to work with us, as ‘ambassadors’ for Tomorrow's Global Company, please contact Gerard via email on gerard@tomorrowscompany.com or via telephone on +44 (0)20 7222 7443. We will be organising briefing and training sessions, so that more and more people can act us advocates of the report and its findings.  There are many other ways you can be part of this mission for change.

Inquiry report advocates wider role for tomorrow’s global company

Tomorrow’s global companies should work with governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and others to create stronger frameworks of law and regulation for the world’s markets, according to a report launched today by a group of prominent business and NGO leaders.

The report, Tomorrow’s Global Company: challenges and choices, argues that stronger frameworks are needed to enable companies to create wealth and shareholder value at the same time as delivering practical solutions to global issues such as climate change, persistent poverty and human rights abuses.

It says that this is particularly important at a time when the world is undergoing a period of unprecedented change, with a rising population, rapid economic growth, the spread of globalisation, pressure on the environment and continuing social, political and cultural divisions.

The report is the result of an 18 month inquiry by a team drawn from people working for businesses and NGOs based in Europe, North America and Asia. These included: ABB, Alcan, Anglo American, Amnesty International Business Group, BP, Dr. Reddy’s, Ford, the International Institute for Sustainable Development, Infosys, KPMG, Leaders’ Quest, McKinsey, Standard Chartered, SUEZ, and SustainAbility. The inquiry has been initiated by Tomorrow’s Company, a think-tank focused on business issues, to generate ideas and promote debate on the role of global companies in society.

The team members state that they have shared their diverse perspectives and experiences as well as trying to use learning from past mistakes to build aspirations for the future.

Corporate purpose and values - time for a re-think?

Since the original inquiry into Tomorrow's Company in 1995, purpose and values have been central to the work of Tomorrow's Company. Their continued importance is reflected in many of the discussions taking place in our current inquiry - Tomorrow's Gloabl Company.

In latest publication from Tomorrow's Company, the third in a series that accompany the inquiry, George Binney explores not just what companies are saying, in relation to their purpose and values, but also what they are doing and the consequences in terms of business performance. He looks at the rise of shareholder focus and suggests some ways leaders might influence the sense of purpose and values for their organisations.
