UK Business: What’s wrong? What works? What’s next? is the outcome of the Futures Project that reviewed progress over the last 20 years since the founding of Tomorrow’s Company.
Despite considerable progress and success in many areas of UK business, there are a number of concerns from low investment to low real wage growth, low employee engagement, low productivity, low public trust and poor returns to shareholders. In addition, the government is exhausting the tools it has to boost the economy, from budget deficits to low interest rates and quantitative easing.
Too often these concerns are treated separately when in fact they are all connected by the approach our companies take. Encouragingly there is an alternative approach for which there is mounting evidence and examples. This is an approach that recognises that people are emotional beings not calculating machines, that more success flows from effective relationships than from impersonal transactions and that to achieve something great takes time, which in turn involves risk. The message of Tomorrow’s Company is as relevant and urgent as ever.
We will present the report and how Tomorrow’s Company plans to take the agenda forward through its work in leadership, governance and stewardship. Tomorrow’s Company’s strength comes from its community of business leaders who believe in change.
