Mapping the Global Transition  to the Solar Age From “Economism” to Earth Systems Science

The world is facing growing and significant challenges which are unique in their complexity, inter-connectivity, and large global impact. It is increasingly recognised that most of the previous assumptions about solutions for a secure and prosperous future no longer adequately address the immensity of today’s questions. In this thought-provoking and agenda-setting publication, Hazel offers a new solution to obsolete frameworks. She advocates a transition to a ‘solar age’ as a pathway to a more green and sustainable economic future.

Hazel’s publication builds on her lifetime of extraordinary achievements. It lays out a road map advocating a paradigm shift to a new future through a multi-disciplinary approach, a changed way of systems thinking, and by the adoption of new values and innovation.

The core of this publication is a blueprint for a transition to a green economy. It challenges not only existing economic models, but also the definition of resilience, approaches to adaptability, human behaviour, and ideas of sustainability. In addition to this, the call for new metrics is made as current ones inadequately represent or exclude important indicators such as health, education, and poverty. In light of this, financial crises and subsequent recessions can be viewed as breakthroughs in hastening the global transition from a fossil-fuel age to a more sustainable ‘solar age’.
