Executive Summary

This study of employee owned companies in the UK examined the characteristics of such companies and how these make a difference to performance. It concluded that when employee ownership and participation are combined there is a positive effect on the performance of the company. However, the existence of employee ownership or participation on its own does not produce a significant impact in performance. When compared with other companies, employee owned companies outperformed the median for their sector peer group.
